The Copper Country Ancient Sites Conservancy is pleased to have recently held:
"Copper And Culture: A Conference on Prehistoric Metal Working In The Lake Superior Region"

This conference was held Aug 7-8th 2015 at the Houghton High School Auditorium.

Speakers and their topics were:

 1.Bill Rose, retired geologist from MTU presented: Keweenaw Geomystery. Why Is Native Copper Here?

 2.Larry Furo, presented "The Neubauer - Furo Native Copper Manufacturing
Process : A New Paradigm For An Ancient Technology'' Presenting with Larry will be David Furo and David(Buck) Peterson.

3. Ritchie Brown, Ho Chunk member and investigator of several ancient sites with Dr. James P. Scherz presented: "Honoring Native Memories  and Sites."

4. Bill Haller discussed: "The Historic Isle Royale Mine."

5. Dr. David Pompeani, lead author of the lake core sediment studies dating metal use in the Copper Country,  presented: "Using Lakes to Map Ancient Copper Mining"

6.Seth DePasqual, Cultural Resource Manager for Isle Royale Nat'l. Park

7.Jim Paquette,  presented: "The Find of a Thousand Lifetimes: The Story of the Gorto Site Discovery" a professionally investigated site with 10,000 YBP lithics.

8. Monette Bebow-Rienhard discussed her work in cataloging, through type and place, found copper artifacts.

9. Don Spohn, Expert Copper Artifact Typologist, and researcher for over 75 years spoke about Copper Typology.

10. Dr. Thomas Pleger, Great Lakes Archaeologist and President of Lake Superior State University presented: "Great Lakes Archaic Indians: The Origins of Prehistoric Metal Technology in Eastern North America."
